We have many customers asking the question “Which should I go for a Caravan or a Motorhome?”

From our experience gathered over the years, through talking to our customers. We can give you some information that may or could be of use to you.

So, one of the big talking points we come across is usage. What we mean by that is, where are you going to explore and for how long at each stop over?

Caravan

For many but by no means all, Caravan users tend to go away for weekends in one spot or indeed longer, say a week or two. For people wanting to head out, having transport to get around for a bit of sight seeing or even popping to the shops can be handy. The caravan works well in this environment. Also not having to pack away each time you want head out for a journey.

Caravans also use all the space with no need to have the area up front to drive. This tends to give you better space or a smaller unit.

Motorhome or van conversion

Motorhomes also have many benefits. One of which is places to stay for free! Apps are available for finding places to stay, many of which are in public house car parks. Most have a policy of have a meal and a drink and stay the with no charge. This method seems to be becoming ever popular.

Stopping off for a quick cuppa is very easy or a rest stop. Stopping at places of natural beauty can be better catered for when touring in a Motorhome.

Doing a big tour with just overnight stops then heading to the next point can particularly work well with a motorhome, for example the “NC 500” or a tour round Ireland, Wales, England or indeed Europe.

Some people tow a car with their motorhome. But with A frame law changes in the EU you will need a trailer? No problem round the UK though. In our opinion though, if you are going to tow you might as well tow a Caravan. Just our opinion though.

Running costs

Purchase prices vary greatly depending on age and specification. As a rough guide, you will be looking around double the price like for like when purchasing a Motorhome.

A caravan will need a service once a year, costing around £305 to £400 and insuring £250-£450.

A motorhome will need a habitation service once a year at around £234. Also the engine and chassis will need servicing at around 2 yearly intervals costing anywhere from £100-£800. Insurance is from £350-£700.

This has been a quick guide and by no means the whole story when making the big decision.
